그녀는 드문 시적 천재성을 지닌 가수이자 작사자이다.
인간 존재의 근본에 대한 깊은 통찰을 보여 주어 모든 연령층,
모든 분야의 사람들로부터 사랑을 받아왔다.
1959년 6월 11일, 미국의 캘리포니아주 산타 모니카에서 태어났으며
한 살 무렵, 어머니와 함께 뉴욕으로 이사하여 여러 인종이 모인
거친 동네에서 성장했다. 아홉 살 때부터 시를 쓰기 시작했고, 1
4살 때부터는 노래를 쓰기 시작했다.
뉴욕 공연 예술 고등학교에서 현대무용을 공부했고,
콜럼비아 대학교의 바나드 대학에서 영문학을 전공하였다.
대학 시절, 그리니치 빌리지 거리에서 공연을 많이 하였다.
1984년, 그녀에 관한 열렬한 찬사가 담긴 논평이 <뉴욕 타임즈>에
실린 뒤, 그녀는 마침내 유명 레코드 회사와 계약을 맺게 되고,
그 뒤로 많은 사람들을 감동시킨 한 독창적이고 시적인 노래들을
계속 발표하였다.
